Caustic paint removers typically sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda) works by breaking down the chemical bonds of the paint.
chemical stripping gives the best possible result, can be the most gentle on the wood
caustic stripping will remove most finishes, especially good on thick paint build up
Metals: strip really well especially fireplaces, gates and ornate items as the caustic liquid can reach everywhere, but note: caustic doesn’t remove rust.
Pine: strips great, such as doors, chest of drawers, cupboards, chairs, skirting boards and architraves, etc, but saying that, pitch pine ( the dark grainy pine found in churches ) can go furry and is a nightmare to sand off, if it does fur.
Beech: strips really well, beech is mainly used for chairs.
Oak, elm, walnut: strips well, but does go slightly darker than the wood in it’s natural state with a greyish tinge, but when sanded and stained dark, looks good.
Satinwood: normally very good.
Plywood and veneer: It’s not recommended but it’s down to you and the stripper to decide, it can be done but you have to keep an eye on it all the time as it will start to lift off.
Plastic: Strips very well.
